Inhalation anesthesia in animals refers to an anesthetic technique in which anesthetic agents are administered via the respiratory tract, thereby suppressing the central nervous system and inducing temporary loss of consciousness without eliciting systemic pain. It is also the primary method of general anesthesia. The depth of anesthesia correlates with the distribution of the drug within brain tissue; as the agent is eliminated from or metabolized in the body, the animal gradually regains consciousness without any lasting sequelae.
A Study on the Application of the Echo-Enhanced Needle in Ultrasound-Guided Posterior Rami Blockade of the Lumbar and Sacral Nerves
Visibility of the needle shaft and tip is critical for ultrasound‑guided peripheral nerve blocks. Currently, most puncture needles used in ultrasound‑guided nerve blocks only allow visualization of the moving needle trajectory as it displaces surrounding tissues. When the target site is deep or the insertion angle is steep, the entire needle—particularly its tip—is poorly depicted on ultrasound images, posing potential safety concerns. A novel puncture needle features numerous grooves at the distal end of the shaft, which enhance ultrasonic reflection toward the transducer, thereby improving needle visualization on ultrasound. This provides clinicians with an additional option for ultrasound‑guided nerve blockade, as the increased echogenicity of the needle facilitates more precise imaging, enhances puncture accuracy, and reduces procedural risks. In summary, ultrasound can accurately identify the lumbar transverse processes and facet joints, enabling guidance for lumbar medial branch nerve blocks. Compared with conventional puncture needles, echo‑enhanced needles yield higher success rates and greater overall pain relief in ultrasound‑guided lumbar medial branch nerve blocks. By improving image clarity and procedural accuracy, these enhanced needles contribute to improved clinical safety and hold promising prospects for widespread use in practice.
